Point’s local shop, Buth an Rubha, will pass from private into community ownership as well-known owner Norman Macleod hands the reins to Urras Storas an Rubha. Norman, who came out of retirement in 2013 to set up the popular shop at the old Knock School says that at 83, he’s looking forward to his second go at retirement commenting, “I came out of retirement to set up and run Buth an Rubha in 2013 and am very pleased to see that the shop will continue to serve our local community. I’m grateful to Urras Storas an Rubha and the help of Point and Sandwick Trust to continue the work that myself and many staff have built over the years. The outpouring of support from the community for our shop and café in the last few days has been lovely to hear.”
Angus Lamont, Chairman of Urras Storas an Rubha commented, “We are committed to keeping the brilliant facility of Buth an Rubha open and to secure the jobs it brings to our community. We are also looking at the viability of Café Roo and will do our best to support its sustainability in the future. None of this would have been possible without the support of Point and Sandwick Trust and we look forward to many more years of our community shop here in Point.”
PST General Manager, DJ MacSween added, “Norman has led a life of service to our local community since running the mobile van shops with his brother Murdo in the 60’s and Buth an Rubha and Café Roo from 2013. We are indebted to his work in setting up the shop here in Knock and are very pleased to support Urras Storas an Rubha plans to keep the shop open and transition into community ownership.”
Buth An Rubha will remain open at Aros an Rubha and be managed by Urras Storas an Rubha under the name Aros Trading. Café Roo is currently shut but options for its long-term sustainability will be considered by all parties.
